Claudiaâs Ambush Unit
After receiving Oliviaâs orders, Claudia and Ashton took their forces around to the rear of the imperial army. They succeeded in avoiding attracting the enemyâs attention, but another problem had presented itself.
âHmmm.â Ashton stared up at the crown of the hill in a state of uncertainty. âThatâs an unexpected development.â
The Helios Knights laying siege to the hill numbered more than twice as many as the three-thousand-strong decoy force holding them back.
The imperial army wasnât taking any chances against Olivia, that much was clear. As much as Claudia might have despised the âDeath Godâ nickname, she couldnât deny that Ashtonâs plan had worked any longer.
The problem was that it wasnât really Olivia up on the hill. She more or less knew how to swing a sword, but apart from that, she was just another soldier with dyed hair and special armor.
âThis is all because you had her wave that banner around,â said Claudia. âThose knights outnumber them more than two-to-one. Even with the advantage of terrain, the decoy force canât hold on for long, and before long the attackers will see through the disguise. So,â she announced, her voice dripping with sarcasm, âwhat should we do, o all-knowing tactician?â
Ashton, looking troubled, scratched absentmindedly at his cheek. âI admit that I was overly optimistic. The reputation of the Death God is even more ingrained than I thought. But that meansââ
âTheir main forceâs defenses will be even lighter. Right?â Claudia interjected. Ashtonâs eyes went wide for a moment, then a smirk spread over his face. Though it was irrelevant to the matter at hand, Claudia found herself thinking that sheâd rarely seen a man who suited such an expression less.
âWhat was the sarcasm for, if you already had it worked out?â Ashton teased. âThatâs just mean, Lieutenant.â
âThis is only happening because your misjudgment happened to turn into a favorable situation, and donât you forget it,â Claudia snapped. Ashton had a keen eye for his surroundings, but it was people like that who failed to look at the ground under their own feet, and people like that who died first in a battle. Especially when they couldnât even swing a sword properly. It was up to Claudia, therefore, to watch out for him instead.
